surface pattern design by HOPE johnson

HIYA. I’m Hope.

I’m so glad you’re here. There’s a lot out there in this virtual internet world and I’m truly smitten that you’ve landed here and stayed long enough. I’ve made some of my best friends through little squares on instagram and I’d love to see you there too!

I began my creative journey when I was …well, about five years old when my was gifted the program Printshop Deluxe. If you know the program too, our age is showing! Stationery became my first love and knew I had a niche for the fine art printing process. I focused my college degree on fine art/printmaking and learned the art of analogue printmaking techniques - lithography, block printing, silkscreen, and letterpress printing had me hooked.

After graduating college in 2011, entrepreneurship took its lead as I branded my wedding stationery business. I’ve worked with some of the nation’s leading wedding vendors building dream weddings and telling stories through fine art paper. Through my artistic career, I learned how much I love the process - the process of bringing inspiration to a sketchbook, bringing that to a mood-board, and watching that mood-board come to life. Somewhere in the process of illustrating florals and venues, I wanted the process part more and more.

In 2017, I began taking any course on surface pattern design I could get my hands on. I created hundreds and hundreds of patterns and knew that, when I’d wake up hours before the sun to make just one more, that this was something I’d have to do. In early 2019, I decided to retire my wedding stationery brand and dive full force into surface pattern design, but I have continued my first love for stationery through teaching. You can find my courses - from letterpress printing to wedding stationery to creative strategies - on Skillshare.

Currently, I’ve had the honor to work with several brands in collaboration with my artwork. Getting back to my roots, my passion for pattern, and my art for arts sake is my current journey. I’m honored to have you along for the ride.

I married my high school sweetheart, Michael, not long after high school. We live in a small Louisiana town with our little wild ones, Finn and Isla (with number three on the way) and I’m just so honored to have my paint brushes at my finger tips at all times. I’m a total INTJ with an inner spirit that can be hard to tame. My work reflects my love for the home, the emotional connections to your surroundings, and that feel-good vibe that I would hope we’d all long for in our lives.

It’s nice to meet you, friend.

If you stick around long enough, you may get some INK on your hands.
